We're talking to Vinny Appice, drummer of legendary men like John Lennon and DIO, a legend himself. Vinny will perform in six drum workshops in Brazil, in Limeira, Recife, Londrina, Belo Horizonte, São Paulo and Curitiba.
Vinny Appice: I'm fine. I'm getting tired just hearing it all.
Sorry.
Vinny Appice: It is a very large agenda. [Laughs]
What Brazilian drummers and fans in general can expect from their upcoming drum workshops?
Vinny Appice: Well, actually, I taught a workshop here in Brazil a few years ago and it was such an overwhelming success, it was a really fun time. In these workshops I'll play some songs of my story, some songs that played with DIO, some songs I played with BLACK SABBATH and I will talk a bit about the songs on the history of the songs, we create the songs, parts of battery, stuff like that, what the fans want to know behind the scenes of how these songs were made. And, of course, there will be lots of music and i will demonstrate some drum licks I use, I will show how to apply them, how to practice, there will be many tips on how to play the drums, there will be a period of questions and answers, there will be drum solos ... So it will be a like a bit of a good rock show. Then I think in some of them there will be a band playing after me and I will play a few songs with them SABBATH and DIO.
It's very exciting. But I will tell you something about the audience. You might be accustomed to audiences formed nearly 100% of drummers, I do not know, but here there will be many metalheads who are fans of his work with SABBATH, DIO, KILL DEVIL HILL, but never played drums in life, can not even keep some tapping rhythm on a table (which is my case), but that will not prevent them from attending the shows and watch your presentation. What kind of advantage that kind of audience can take more than one workshop as yours?
Vinny Appice: Well, you know, it happens in a drum workshop live or any other type of music workshop, for example, guitar or bass. I know that the Internet is great, of course with lessons where you can see the person playing, but there's something about seeing the person playing live, right there in a small place, with you sitting three meters away that explodes your mind explodes around you. It is often more inspiring than watching someone in a video or a computer, or even your mobile phone. Hopefully, people will come. Usually we have many guitarists and bassists, especially drummers. Hopefully, it will be inspiring for them. And if there is any question they have about things I've done in my career, it will be the opportunity to ask. People can come and be inspired.
I would like to address this issue for professional drummers. You have your own style and that is recognizable everywhere. What do you think is essential for a drummer to be recognized as not only talented, but also to be recognized among his peers as a special drummer.
Vinny Appice: Well, you have to be a number of things, one of them, first of all, is being on time [laughs]. You know, this is an important thing. People travel and go places where it is hard to deal with. Even in BLACK SABBATH, when they had tests to 1h of everyone afternoon I was there at 15 for 1h or 12h. It's fascinating, even with all those legends, everyone was punctual. This is an important thing. Second, listen. Listen to what you're playing and try to get inspired by the song. I try to get into the songs. Instead of just playing the songs I like to play the songs. Listen to what the words say in the song. Try to defend ideas. Be creative. The main thing is to be available for the song and the band. Do not rush, because when drummer rushes in a band, the whole band is quick and does not sound as heavy and does not sound so good, then I know it is listening. If anyone has suggestions, be open to suggestions. All this is to be a good team player, a good team player. If you are a team player, team player, you have more work and more offers in the music business, contrary to what happens if you have a closed mind and not want to do anything beyond what want to do. Those are important things.
On "Drum Wars Live!", You released an album with his brother, Carmine, where you break all limits and "compete against each other" on drums. How was that experience and what else can you tell us about this record?
Vinny Appice: The album was recorded in New York City as part of a show we did there last year and it was a great show and we love doing it. And six more shows are coming in July in the United States. It was an evening of music. Although it is called Drum Wars has many songs about eight songs that we played our past, BLACK SABBATH, DIO, Carmine played some things Ozzy, the BLUE MURDER and ROD STEWART and among them some drum duets that We write and play and and some soils. So it's an exciting and cool rock concert. And we really instigamos each other to break our limits, because we were both playing. It was not exactly a competition, but a friendly competition. And we went into the fight. It was something I tried to do better. I did something, he tried to do. It was something I tried to do. We instigávamos each other. We sometimes went out of the physically hurt stage for forcing us so much and so loud. "Oh, my hand hurts." "My shoulder hurts." But it was a fun time and we enjoyed it. We hope we can one day bring to Brazil. It would be amazing.
Actually, I only heard the album and found the amazing album. Imagine seeing live. It is in addition to the workshops, alone or with his brother, what are your current projects?
Vinny Appice: I left the KILL DEVIL HILL, was not working, it was difficult to make it work. And now I just record an album with the LAST IN LINE, the original band DIO, Vivian Campbell of Def Leppard on guitar, Jimmy Brain on bass, myself and have a new singer named Andy Freeman touching a show in Las Vegas called "The Rock Vault" is a great singer, I played with them a few times before with George Lynch and others. We just recorded an album with Frontiers Records and we'll start touring in January which is when the album will come out. The first show will be with Def Leppard in Rock Cruise, which departs from Florida in July, I think in 22 or 23 July. So this will be our first big show kicks and then we'll do a big tour next year when the album comes out. So we're doing it. And I'm working with my brother, Drum Wars. And in many small projects are recording now, one of them is called WAMI with a Polish guitarist of 16 years called Iggy is unbelievable. And we launched a record last year with Doogie White on vocals, Marco Mendoza on bass and we are now working on a new album. Maybe we'll do some shows. A number of things like that, and workshops between one and the other. Things are very hectic.
I would like to ask you about JOHN LENNON and DIO because they are legends in music. How was working with legends like them?
Vinny Appice: It was amazing, you know. I was only 16 and was in high school. I would work with John in the evening and then go to school the other day. It was so strange to be working with one of the BEATLES and then go to school normally, have a normal life was very different. It was awesome. And I do not treat him as a fan, you know, I tried to be a professional musician and treat him as a fellow musician. And it was great. We [the band VINNY at the time] were managed by a New York studio where John Lennon recorded an album. Then we were called to clap on one of the drives him. So we were in the rehearsal room, where we were every night. We were managed by them, so we had a room for free. Then one day they called us and we clap in "Whatever Gets You Through The Night", a song he did with ELTON JOHN, so me and my band that song.
Vinny Appice: And he began attending our rehearsal room and chatting with us. It was wonderful. And then he ended up calling us to play a show with him. So did a show in New York, which was televised to the whole world. It was the last appearance of it live. There were no more live appearances him after that until he, you know, passed away. So it was a wonderful time in my life. I wish I had taken some pictures. You know, I do not want to look like a fan. "Hey, can I take a picture?" "Hey, give me an autograph," I did no such thing. And I kick myself for it now. I wanted to have at least one autograph from him.
I understand what is it perfectly.
Vinny Appice: Yeah. I look into the past and I think, was very wonderful. I am glad to have had the opportunity to meet and to work with a person like that. It was unbelievable.
What about DIO?
Vinny Appice: DIO? You know, Ronnie was amazing. You know, just to begin with, work with Black Sabbath was amazing. Get into a band like that, with Ronnie, Geezer and Tommy was unbelievable. And hear Ronnie sing all night was so inspiring and wonderful. And we ended up staying good friends. We had many things in common. Were both Italians. Both liked some of the same foods. And we did not like some of the same foods. So we had a lot in common and we were good friends. We met offstage too, you know, when we were at home we found ourselves too. And create music with such a wonderful person as Ronnie, a creative musician and incredible singer. He made everything sound incredible. To a small guitar riff with singing it you say "WOW". He was so strong. It's so good. He was a great friend and great musician. He loved the fans. He loved music and loved the fans. He always took time to meet fans, sign autographs, he remembered his name the following year, unlike me you always forget everything, then, Ronnie was a single person, a wonderful person to work with.
I believe we're nearing the end of our interview, but before we close yet have two issues to do for you ...
Vinny Appice: We also ... we will also ... sorry for interrupting you. This weekend we'll put on a show for the five-year anniversary of his death, we will all play in the place where he is buried. At the cemetery has a large hall with a stage and we'll play there. The weekend will be all dedicated to Ronnie. We play there, we play in a large park outdoors in Los Angeles, so let's pay homage the five years that he is no longer with us. We will honor it.
There is a question I always ask for my interviewees. Is there any Brazilian band that you like or that has had some influence on his playing drums, or that you like to listen to at home?
Vinny Appice: I'm not really familiar with any Brazilian artist except SEPULTURA, you know. I had the chance to be a bit like Max in November, we did some shows, one in São Paulo, one of them in Bolivia. A great guy, a great musician. Unfortunately I could not play with him, but it was a great meeting and it is in a great band and the drummer of this band plays some very good things. The only thing the more I heard about Brazilian music is that it is amazing, it's wonderful too.
I'd like you to leave a message for all their Brazilian fans, drummers or not, especially for those who will attend their workshops and for those who will read this interview and will hear it in Metal Militia Web Radio.
Vinny Appice: My Brazilian fans, I'm dying to go there and play for you, meet you, I want you to come to the workshops, Enjoy the music, short the battery, enjoy yourselves. Brazilians are always passionate fans. All the bands I worked with, and I even all love playing in Brazil. And thanks for the support.
